9/29/19 – Positano & Pop Songs

K –

Well, Positano was gorgeous! I’m so glad I went but there wasn’t much to do there besides take in the view and eat. Nina told me about a great restaurant you have to take a boat to get to but I couldn’t find the dock for it and it was too hot to keep looking. Next time!

I was a little sad to see how Positano was so overrun with tourists. If my Marcello was there, I probably was just annoyed he was in my way or smoking in my face. I know tourism helps the people of these towns by bringing in money but this seemed excessive. I ended up taking an earlier ferry back to Sorrento just so I didn’t have to be around so many people. You know how I feel about people – they’re the worst.

On the ferry ride back, I decided to listen to music while I took in the scenic coastline. Some might think the new Taylor Swift album is a bit pedestrian for the Amalfi Coast but I found it perfect. There’s a song she wrote about her mom being sick called ‘Soon You’ll Get Better’ and it makes me cry every time. It reminds me of Mom and how scary and horrible everything was when she was sick. But today, one verse stood out and made me think of you too –

And I hate to make this all about me

But who am I supposed to talk to?

What am I supposed to do

If there’s no you?

I’m grateful that I do have plenty of people to talk to but there’s always a void that can’t be filled – jokes that only you get, a language only we spoke. I think I am starting to figure out what I’m supposed to do, though. So that’s something, I guess.

Then I put my music on shuffle and TLC’s ‘Creep’ came on and I had to laugh. Was that you trying to cheer me up?  It worked! I was still on the ferry so I refrained from getting up to dance but I definitely thought about it. I wasn’t wearing silk pajamas though so it would’ve been all wrong anyway.

I spent the evening at the hotel bar, drinking prosecco and watching the sunset again. The views are just so pretty, I couldn’t get enough. Then I wandered some of the quieter streets, away from the tourists and just enjoyed my last night in Sorrento. I finished by having a dinner of 3 cannolis and some prosecco I snuck into my room from the first floor of my hotel. I did get caught but my only regret was not sneaking more!

Tomorrow I head back to Rome on an early train and then to a tour of the Colosseum. I’m excited for one last chance to learn about this ancient place but I’ll also be happy to get back home on Sunday. I’ve loved it here but my kingdom for a real Diet Coke and some free water!  Kidding…sort of…
