9/20/19 – Arrival

K –

I made it! I’m here! Can you believe it? I kind of can’t, even though I’ve been waiting so long for it to come.

I landed early this morning and since my room wasn’t ready yet, I left my bags at the hotel and set out to see as much as I could before my red eye flight caught up to me. First, I went to the Spanish Steps. If I’m honest, I was a little disappointed. I’m not sure what I’m confusing them with but it definitely wasn’t the place I was expecting to see.

Then I headed to the Trevi Fountain and OMG. Wow. I loved it so much. I wanted everyone else to go away so I could sit there all day and look at it. The bright white against a crisp blue sky was everything. I threw a euro in the fountain and found myself doing it for you. I don’t even know why. It just felt like the thing to do.

I later read that you’re supposed to throw a coin in so you will return to Rome. I had forgotten that was the idea behind it. I wondered how many coins you threw back when you lived here. I’m so sorry the fountain failed you. It failed us both, really.

Next I wandered over to the Pantheon and then Piazza Navona, where I stopped at a cafe and sat outside for lunch. It was all so lovely. I wandered a little more but I was so tired so ended up back at the hotel for a nap.

Then I ran out of ideas of what to do. I have tours later in the trip for the big things so I couldn’t do those and I didn’t know what else was worth the time and effort. I wanted to ask you what were your favorite things to do and see and what do you feel like doing now. I felt lost.

So I did what we always do best – went to the hotel bar for a drink and figured it out. You would’ve hated it! Pigeons kept trying to steal my snacks off the table. There was one dark pigeon who sat just close enough and then stared at me. Creepy. I wondered if you had sent him as a joke. If you did? Not funny! Please cease and desist immediately.

Now it’s time for bed and I’ve written a letter instead of a postcard. I guess I had a lot I wanted to tell you. I miss you!

Ciao, bella!
